K-State Drops Match to Arkansas, 4-0

The K-State women’s tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to Arkansas on Saturday (January 28) during the second day of the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Palo Alto, Calif. at the Taube Family Tennis Center.

Arkansas (3-1) claimed the doubles point over the Wildcats (1-3) as freshmen Rozalia Gruszczynska and Vanesa Suárez in the No. 1 position dropped their set 6-2 to Morgan Cross and Indianna Spink. Sophomore Florentine Dekkers and junior Manami Ukita fell to Lenkra Stara and Grace O’Donnell in the No. 2 position, 6-1.

The Razorbacks then posted singles matches at No. 1, 2 and 5 to clinch the match.

Gruszczynska was swept in her first set against Indianna Spink in the No. 2 position, 6-0, but showed some resistance in their second set but eventually fell 6-3.

Freshman Maria Santos saw a similar situation against Morgan Cross in the No. 5 position as she lost 6-0 in the first set before showing some fight in set 2 before falling 6-3.

Dekkers battled in both sets against Kelly Keller in the No. 1 position before losing 6-4, 6-2.

Senior Rosanna Maffei (6-3) and Ukita (6-4) won their opening sets at the No. 4 and No. 6 positions, respectively, but their matches went unfinished due to the match being clinched.

Suárez forced Carolina Gomez to match point in the No. 3 position before falling 7-5, but her second set was left unfinished at 3-2.

K-State continue its road trip next weekend as the Wildcats travel to Iowa City to face Denver on Saturday (February 4) and Iowa (1-1) on Sunday (February 5).

FROM THE COURT

HEAD COACH JORDAN SMITH

On the team’s overall performance this weekend…

“Not our best overall performance on the weekend. It doesn’t matter if both teams are higher ranked than us. We didn’t meet our standards and we can do better. That will definitely change before next weekend.”
