U.S. Representative Tracey Mann (KS-01) participated in a House Agriculture Committee hearing titled “Financial Conditions in Farm Country” today. In his remarks, Rep. Mann emphasized the necessity of a five-year Farm Bill to address market volatility and provide stability for the agricultural community. He also underscored the importance of federal crop insurance for farmers, ranchers, and agricultural producers in Kansas' Big First District.
Rep. Mann stated: "Thank you all for being here as we underscore the need for a comprehensive, five-year Farm Bill. The title of this hearing is the Financial Conditions in Farm Country. I can tell you as the Congressman from the Big First District in Kansas where we raise a lot of wheat, a lot of sorghum, a lot of corn, a lot of beans, and a lot of cotton, the two words I would use to describe the financial conditions of the farm economy are 'concerning' and 'worsening.' About a year ago, Chairman Thompson and I hosted a Farm Bill listening session in the middle of a wheat field in the Big First District of Kansas. We heard from 150 Kansans about their priorities for a Farm Bill."
He continued: "They were clear – we need a Farm Bill that gives them certainty as they work day-in and day-out to feed, clothe, and fuel the world. We need a Farm Bill that addresses record-high inflation, risky market volatility, and extreme conditions that we are seeing on farms and ranches in Kansas and in every corner of America. We need a Farm Bill that prioritizes farm country and gets input prices back under control. We need a Farm Bill that’s long enough to provide certainty and short enough to reflect market demands. We need it now."
