John Riggins was born in Seneca, Kansas, on August 4, 1949. He attended Centralia High School, where he played multiple sports, and then played college football at the University of Kansas. Riggins was a fullback in the NFL for the New York Jets and Washington Redskins. He was known for his consistent rushing ability and set a record with 24 rushing touchdowns in 1983. At age 34, he led the league in rushing touchdowns again in 1984. Riggins was named MVP of Super Bowl XVII after rushing 166 yards and scoring a touchdown. He retired after a 14-year career with over 11,000 rushing yards and 104 touchdowns. In 1992, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Seneca and the nearby community of Centralia recognize his achievements, with the local high school football field named Riggins Field. His roots in Seneca mark the beginning of a notable football career.
