At noon Tuesday, October 18, Firefighters from Riley County Fire District #1 (RCFD#1) and Manhattan Fire Department (MFD) were dispatched to reports of a structure fire located at 203 William Drive in Ogden. When crews arrived, they found a single family residence and backyard chicken coop with smoke and flames visible. MFD crews were first on scene and aggressively attacked the fire. Working together, the two crews were able to bring the fire under control within 15 minutes, then checked the home for damage and additional fire spread.
No injuries were reported. The home sustained major smoke damage as well as significant fire damage to two rooms. The preliminary damage estimate is $200,000 to the structure and contents.
The cause of the fire was a heat lamp inside the chicken coop. One chicken died in the fire and several escaped unharmed.
“The chicken coop was located near the home and fire extended up the home’s exterior siding, soffit, and into the attic space,” said RCFD#1 Deputy Chief John Martens. “Thankfully, everyone was able to get out quickly and no one was injured.”
Personnel from Riley County Emergency Medical Services (RCEMS) and Riley County Police Department (RCPD) were also on scene to assist. Thankfully, no medical treatment was needed. RCEMS and RCPD co-respond for all structure fires in Riley County.
