U.S. Representatives Tracey Mann, Sam Graves, and Scott Perry, along with their Republican colleagues from the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, have criticized FEMA for alleged political discrimination. The group sent a letter to FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell, condemning guidance that reportedly instructed disaster relief workers to avoid homes displaying pro-Trump signs.
The controversy arose after reports indicated that during Hurricane Milton's aftermath in Florida, a FEMA supervisor advised employees to "avoid homes advertising Trump." Records confirmed that assistance was withheld from these homes following the directive.
The lawmakers expressed their dissatisfaction in the letter: “Your inability to ensure that FEMA provide relief to all Americans affected by disasters, free of discrimination, represents a substantial failure of leadership.” They emphasized that ignoring supporters of President-elect Trump contradicts FEMA’s mission and values.
The representatives demanded a briefing from FEMA on how it plans to prevent such discrimination in the future. They also requested documents related to disaster relief efforts concerning Hurricane Helene and those conducted in Florida. The deadline for this information is December 2, 2024.
This situation falls under the oversight of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, which monitors FEMA's activities within the Department of Homeland Security.
