WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representatives Tracey Mann (KS-01) and Chris Pappas (NH-01) introduced the End Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) Act of 2024. The bipartisan legislation aims to reduce intoxicated driving incidents by implementing a national ignition interlock standard.
Highlighting the importance of the legislation, Rep. Tracey Mann emphasized, “Every life has value and is worthy of protection from harm.” The bill proposes mandatory first-time ignition interlock laws to decrease recidivism and enhance road safety. Rep. Mann pointed out that, on average, 37 individuals in America lose their lives daily in drunk-driving related accidents.
Echoing the urgency of addressing drunk driving, Rep. Chris Pappas stated, “Drunk driving kills and injures far too many Americans every year." The proposed act seeks to hold individuals driving while intoxicated accountable and prevent repeated offenses by encouraging states to adopt ignition interlock laws for first-time offenders.
James Lee, who tragically lost his daughter to a drunk driving incident, emphasized the significance of enforcing laws that deter intoxicated driving. Lee expressed, “Perhaps the most egregious violation of that agreement is the act of driving while intoxicated."
In support of the legislation, various organizations, including Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the National Safety Council, have voiced their endorsement. Stacey D. Stewart, CEO of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, emphasized the importance of upholding safe driving practices as a societal contract.
Advocating for swift action to curb alcohol-impaired driving, Cathy Chase, President of Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, highlighted the urgency in implementing proven solutions. Lorraine Martin, President and CEO of the National Safety Council, underscored the effectiveness of ignition interlock devices in combating impaired driving.
Brandy Nannini, a Board Member of the SAFE coalition, drew parallels between the proposed legislation and past successful nationwide initiatives. Nannini stressed the need for a unified approach to prevent tragic accidents caused by intoxicated driving.
As the nation grapples with the devastating impacts of intoxicated driving, the End DWI Act of 2024 represents a crucial step towards enhancing road safety and reducing preventable fatalities.
