U.S. Representative Tracey Mann (KS-01) addressed the U.S. House of Representatives today in honor of National Police Week, an event recognized since 1984 around Peace Officers Memorial Day to pay tribute to fallen officers, law enforcement personnel, and their families. In his speech, Rep. Mann expressed gratitude for the service of law enforcement agencies across the nation and declared his support for several related legislative pieces due for a vote in the House this week.
"I rise today to honor the brave men and women who wear the badge and put their lives on the line to serve us, protect us, and keep our communities safe," said Rep. Mann. "I proudly back our women and men in blue, and National Police Week is an opportunity for our nation to come together and say thank you to our law enforcement community."
Rep. Mann also referred to a recent study that revealed 58% of Americans believe reducing crime should be a top priority for both the President and Congress. Despite this, he noted that some Washington Democrats continue their calls to 'Defund the Police.'
"We must reject that nonsense," stated Rep. Mann, advocating for support towards those serving on the front line by collecting accurate data to address the increase in anti-police attacks, empowering law enforcement officers to detain any illegal immigrant charged with or convicted of assaulting a law enforcement officer, and ensuring access to various mental health services for officers as they bear the burden of protecting their communities.
"This body will have the opportunity to offer that support this week by voting yes on bills that do just that," added Rep. Mann.
He concluded his speech by emphasizing how crucial law enforcement is in maintaining safety and security within communities: "It is not lost on me that our law enforcement plays the most significant role in securing and defending that safety. We are grateful."
