U.S. Representatives Tracey Mann and Brad Finstad, along with Senators Roger Marshall and Bill Hagerty, have sent a letter to President Biden urging him to oppose a proposal before the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) Council. The proposal could potentially alter governance and leadership at FAO, strengthening China's influence while diminishing American agricultural leadership globally.
The proposed changes include extending the Director-General's tenure from eight years to ten, increasing their $300,000 annual salary and allowance, and granting more control over the U.S.-led World Food Programme. Concerns were raised that this would allow China to expand its global influence during America's political transitions.
"When as many as 700 million people face hunger globally and manmade global conflicts are on the rise, this proposal de-emphasizes any of FAO’s successful efforts to achieve food security and allows China to expand its global influence by taking advantage of America as it transitions political administrations," stated the Members in their letter. They emphasized that "America cannot afford to sit idly by – even in a time of political transition – while China positions itself to expand its influence over a body to which our nation belongs."
The lawmakers urged President Biden "to position American farmers, ranchers, foresters, and agricultural producers as the global leader in food and agriculture" and ensure that American ideals are represented worldwide.
The letter was also signed by Chairman of the Select Committee on the CCP John Moolenaar, along with Reps. Austin Scott, Dusty Johnson, David Rouzer, Ronny Jackson, Mary Miller, Doug LaMalfa, Trent Kelly, and Mark Alford.
