U.S. Representatives Tracey Mann and Gabe Vasquez have introduced a new bipartisan bill titled the Expanding Regional Airports Act. This legislation seeks to provide increased funding opportunities for regional airports, allowing them to upgrade critical security systems, runway and hangar infrastructure, as well as passenger facilities.
Rep. Mann highlighted the importance of regional airports for rural communities: "Rural communities like those in the Big First District depend on regional airports to connect them with the rest of the world," he stated. He emphasized that the act would enhance reliability, drive economic growth, and support livelihoods in small communities.
Rep. Vasquez pointed out the significance of regional airports in New Mexico's connectivity: "In a state as large as New Mexico, regional airports are a way to ensure our state is fully connected," he said. He noted that without dedicated funding, these airports cannot meet growing community needs and expressed his intent to use this bill to boost tourism and business travel.
