WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representative Tracey Mann (KS-01) addressed the U.S. House of Representatives today, urging the White House and Democratic members of Congress to collaborate with House Republicans on securing the border. In his speech, Rep. Mann criticized the Biden Administration’s handling of border security, highlighting that May 2024 marked the thirty-ninth consecutive month where illegal encounters exceeded any peak month under President Trump.
Rep. Mann emphasized the urgency of addressing what he described as a national security and humanitarian crisis exacerbated by current policies. "House Republicans continue to urge the White House and our Democrat colleagues in Congress to work with us to identify a solution," he stated.
During his remarks, Rep. Mann pointed out discrepancies in recent White House communications regarding border crossings. He noted that while there was a reported decrease in illegal crossings following an executive order from President Biden, May still represented a continuation of high encounter rates.
"Our borders are far from secure," said Rep. Mann. He recounted his interactions with constituents across eleven counties in Kansas who expressed concerns about border security.
Rep. Mann proposed several measures to address the issue: completing the border wall, designating Mexican cartels as terrorists, reinstating policies from the Trump Administration such as Remain in Mexico, and ending catch-and-release practices. He also called for a change in messaging to discourage illegal immigration while making legal immigration more accessible.
"President Biden’s false promise was a slap in the face to the 2 million people who legally migrate to the U.S. each year," said Rep. Mann.
In closing, Rep. Mann urged his colleagues to engage in discussions aimed at securing the border: "I ask my colleagues again today, what will it take for you to come to the table to secure the border? We can’t keep pretending the current situation is normal."
